BETWEEN THE DANUBE AND THE BLACK SEA

The Ancient Worlds of Dobrogea - A Journey Through History, Cultures, Flavours and Wild Nature

BETWEEN THE DANUBE AND THE BLACK SEA

Discover a Different Romania

Some destinations impress you with their monuments. Others captivate you with their landscapes, traditions or cuisine. Dobrogea offers something far more intriguing: a remarkable combination of all these experiences, woven together by thousands of years of history.

Tucked between the mighty Danube and the Black Sea, in the southeastern corner of Romania, Dobrogea is a land of extraordinary contrasts. Ancient Greek cities rise from windswept plains, Roman monuments recall the ambitions of emperors, medieval fortresses overlook shimmering lakes, and Ottoman mosques stand as reminders of centuries of cultural exchange. Traditional fishing villages preserve ways of life shaped by water, while vineyards flourish beneath an immense southern sky.

This is where Europe has met the Orient for centuries, where merchants and sailors crossed paths with soldiers and pilgrims, and where Romanian, Turkish, Tatar, Greek, Armenian and Lipovan communities have contributed to a cultural identity unlike anywhere else in the country.

Beyond its fascinating human history, Dobrogea reveals two exceptional natural treasures: the Măcin Mountains, remnants of an ancient geological world, and the magnificent Danube Delta, a vast wilderness of waterways, reed beds, lakes and extraordinary birdlife.

Our nine-day journey invites you to discover this lesser-known Romania at a relaxed and rewarding pace. You will explore archaeological treasures, wander through historic towns, enjoy authentic local cuisine, meet people who keep old traditions alive, taste wines produced between river and sea, and experience the remarkable silence of the Delta from a small boat.

More than a sightseeing holiday, Between the Danube and the Black Sea is an invitation to discover the stories, landscapes and flavours of a region that has been connecting civilizations for over two millennia.

Your Journey, Day by Day

Day 1 – Welcome to Romania: Bucharest

Your Romanian adventure begins in Bucharest, a vibrant capital where grand boulevards, elegant historic buildings and lively neighbourhoods reveal a city of contrasts.

Upon arrival at Henri Coandă International Airport, you will be welcomed by our local representative and transferred privately to your hotel. After settling in and enjoying some time to relax, we gather for a welcome dinner, the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and discover what makes the coming journey so special.

Over dinner, we introduce Dobrogea, a fascinating region that remains surprisingly unfamiliar to many international visitors. Far from the castles and mountain landscapes usually associated with Romania, this is a different world, shaped by ancient civilizations, the influence of the Orient and the waters of the Danube and Black Sea.

Tomorrow, our discovery begins.

Overnight: Bucharest

Meals: Welcome Dinner

Day 2 – In the Footsteps of Roman Emperors: Bucharest – Adamclisi – Constanța

Leaving Bucharest behind, we travel southeast and cross the Danube, entering a landscape that gradually reveals the distinctive character of Dobrogea. Open plains, scattered villages and wide horizons accompany us toward our first encounter with the region's remarkable ancient past.

At Adamclisi, we step into the world of the Roman Empire. Here stands Tropaeum Traiani, the impressive monument associated with Emperor Trajan and the military campaigns that reshaped this frontier at the beginning of the second century AD.

As we explore the archaeological remains and museum, the story of Roman Dobrogea comes to life. This was once a strategically vital territory, where imperial ambitions, military roads and commercial routes converged along one of Europe's most important natural boundaries: the Danube.

Our journey then continues eastward until the landscape opens toward the Black Sea. By afternoon, we arrive in Constanța, Romania's great maritime city, where the ancient world and modern coastal life coexist.

In the evening, we enjoy our first introduction to the flavours of the Black Sea coast, with a dinner inspired by the region's culinary traditions.

Overnight: Constanța

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3 – Constanța: Two Thousand Years of History by the Sea

Few places in Romania tell the story of so many civilizations within such a compact historic setting as Constanța.

Long before it became a modern port, this was Tomis, an ancient Greek settlement that later flourished under Roman rule. Over the centuries, the city passed through Byzantine and Ottoman chapters, gradually developing the distinctive multicultural character that still defines it today.

We spend the day exploring its historic peninsula, where ancient ruins, Roman mosaics, elegant old buildings and religious monuments reveal the many layers of its past.

One of the city's most evocative stories belongs to Ovid, the celebrated Roman poet exiled here by Emperor Augustus. His presence reminds us that this distant Black Sea outpost was once part of a vast cultural world stretching across the Roman Empire.

Yet Constanța is much more than an archaeological destination. For generations, Romanians, Turks, Tatars, Greeks, Armenians, Jews and other communities shared its streets, markets and harbour, leaving their mark on its architecture, traditions and cuisine.

As we explore the city's historic mosque area and multicultural heritage, we discover how the influences of East and West have shaped everyday life along the Black Sea.

A regional meal completes the experience, introducing the tastes and culinary influences of Dobrogea.

Overnight: Constanța

Meals: Breakfast, Regional Meal

Day 4 – Ancient Histria and the Fishermen of Jurilovca

Today we follow the coast northward, travelling through a landscape where the sea, lagoons and open steppe create an atmosphere of remarkable tranquillity.

Our first destination is Histria, one of the most important ancient archaeological sites in Romania. Founded by Greek colonists centuries before the Roman conquest of Dacia, Histria was once a thriving trading centre connected to the wider Mediterranean and Black Sea worlds.

Walking among its ancient streets, defensive walls, temples and later Roman remains, we imagine the merchants, sailors and inhabitants who once brought life to this distant coastal settlement. The surrounding landscape adds a special beauty to the experience, with weathered stone ruins standing against the vast sky and nearby lagoon waters.

From Histria, we continue to Jurilovca, where the atmosphere changes from ancient history to living tradition.

This charming fishing village is closely associated with the Lipovan Russian community, whose identity, customs and cuisine have long been connected to the lakes and waterways of northern Dobrogea.

Here, colourful houses, fishing traditions and the slower rhythm of village life offer an authentic glimpse into a different side of Romania. Whenever possible, we meet local residents and learn about the customs passed down through generations.

The evening brings one of the culinary highlights of our journey: a traditional fish dinner inspired by local recipes, enjoyed close to the waters that have sustained this community for centuries.

Overnight: Jurilovca

Meals: Breakfast, Traditional Fish Dinner

Day 5 – Enisala and Babadag: Where East Meets West

Our morning begins in the beautiful lagoon landscape of Razim-Sinoe. Depending on weather and seasonal conditions, there may be an opportunity to enjoy a boat excursion, experiencing this peaceful world of water, reeds and wide-open horizons from a different perspective.

We then travel to Enisala Fortress, one of Dobrogea's most spectacular medieval landmarks.

Perched high above the surrounding lakes and plains, its surviving stone walls offer breathtaking panoramic views. Standing here, it becomes easy to understand why this region attracted the ambitions of merchants, rulers and competing powers for centuries. The fortress watched over important routes linking the Black Sea, the Danube and the territories beyond.

Our journey continues to Babadag, a town deeply connected with Dobrogea's Ottoman past. Here, another chapter of the region's cultural story unfolds, revealing the traditions of the Turkish and Tatar communities that have helped shape its identity.

As we explore the town's heritage, we discover how architecture, faith, family traditions and cuisine preserve the memory of centuries of cultural exchange.

Lunch introduces another delicious dimension of Dobrogean gastronomy, with flavours reflecting the region's Oriental influences. Depending on local availability, we may also have the opportunity to meet members of the Turkish or Tatar community and hear personal stories about their traditions and way of life.

It is a day that beautifully illustrates the essence of Dobrogea: a place where cultures have not simply passed through, but have lived together and left lasting traces.

Overnight: Babadag / Northern Dobrogea

Meals: Breakfast, Regional Lunch, Dinner

Day 6 – The Ancient Măcin Mountains and the Wines of Dobrogea

After several days exploring cities, fortresses and villages, we turn toward a different kind of history: the extraordinary geological past of Dobrogea.

Travelling west, we reach the Măcin Mountains, a landscape unlike the dramatic peaks of the Carpathians. Although modest in altitude today, these mountains are remnants of an ancient geological formation whose origins reach back hundreds of millions of years.

Here, rugged granite formations, dry grasslands, distinctive vegetation and immense skies create a setting of quiet, unexpected beauty.

We explore the area on a carefully chosen nature walk adapted to the group's abilities, taking time to appreciate the scenery, discover the local flora and watch for birdlife. Far from crowded tourist trails, this is an opportunity to experience one of Romania's most unusual natural environments.

Later, we continue toward Niculițel, in the wine-producing countryside of northern Dobrogea.

Viticulture has deep roots in this part of Romania, where the climate and landscape between the Danube and the Black Sea provide distinctive conditions for growing grapes.

At a selected local winery, we meet the people behind the wines and enjoy a tasting that introduces the character of the region's vineyards. Accompanied by dinner, it is a wonderful opportunity to relax, share impressions and discover another authentic expression of Dobrogea.

Ancient mountains, open landscapes and a glass of local wine: a memorable combination.

Overnight: Niculițel / Northern Dobrogea Wine Country

Meals: Breakfast, Wine Tasting, Dinner

Day 7 – Into the Danube Delta: Where the Roads End

Today our journey takes a beautiful and unforgettable turn.

We travel to Tulcea, the gateway to the Danube Delta, where the roads that have guided us through Dobrogea finally give way to waterways.

Boarding our boat, we leave the familiar world behind and enter one of Europe's most remarkable wetland landscapes.

As we travel deeper into the Delta, the scenery gradually transforms. Wide stretches of water lead into narrow channels bordered by reeds, willow trees lean over quiet banks, and birds appear above the lakes and wetlands.

The pace of life changes almost immediately. Here, the movement of water, the sounds of nature and the rhythm of local communities take the place of busy streets and crowded destinations.

Accompanied by our local guide, we discover the extraordinary relationship between the Delta's natural environment and the people who have lived here for generations.

Our boat takes us to our carefully selected accommodation, surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of this unique region.

In the evening, we enjoy dinner inspired by traditional Delta cuisine, with locally prepared fish dishes whenever appropriate.

As darkness falls and the sounds of the wetlands replace the noise of the outside world, we discover one of the Delta's greatest luxuries: its extraordinary sense of peace.

Overnight: Danube Delta

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 8 – The Danube Delta: A World of Water, Birds and Silence

We dedicate an entire day to discovering the natural beauty and living traditions of the Danube Delta, one of Europe's most extraordinary wetland ecosystems.

Travelling in small boats, we venture through a fascinating network of channels, lakes and reed beds, where the scenery changes with every turn.

Willow forests, floating vegetation and open stretches of water provide habitats for an impressive variety of birds and wildlife. Depending on the season and local conditions, we may encounter pelicans, herons, egrets and many other species that make the Delta a paradise for nature lovers, photographers and birdwatchers.

Rather than following a rigid sightseeing schedule, our route is adapted to water levels, weather and wildlife activity, allowing us to enjoy the landscape at its most rewarding.

There is something deeply special about travelling through the Delta in this way. The gentle movement of the boat, the reflections on the water, the calls of birds and the vastness of the surrounding wetlands create moments that are difficult to capture in photographs alone.

Whenever possible, we also visit a local village and enjoy a traditional lunch, discovering how fishing communities have adapted their daily lives to the changing rhythms of the river.

Throughout our journey, we have encountered people whose histories were shaped by the sea, the frontier, the steppe and the mountains. Here, in the Delta, we discover communities whose lives have always followed the water.

We return to our accommodation in the late afternoon, with time to relax before gathering for a farewell dinner.

It is the perfect setting to celebrate the experiences, discoveries and encounters that have made this journey so memorable.

Overnight: Danube Delta

Meals: Breakfast, Local Lunch, Farewell Dinner

Day 9 – Farewell to Dobrogea: Danube Delta – Tulcea – Bucharest

After breakfast, we enjoy one final boat journey through the Delta, taking in the peaceful waterways and natural scenery before returning to Tulcea.

From here, we continue by road toward Bucharest, bringing our nine-day discovery of Dobrogea to an end.

As we travel, the many experiences of the past days come together: the ancient stones of Histria, the Roman monuments of Adamclisi, the multicultural streets of Constanța, the fishing traditions of Jurilovca, the medieval walls of Enisala, the Oriental heritage of Babadag, the ancient landscapes of Măcin and the vineyards of Niculițel.

And finally, the unforgettable waterways of the Danube Delta.

We leave with more than photographs and memories. We take with us a deeper understanding of a remarkable corner of Europe, where civilizations have met, traditions have survived and nature continues to shape the lives of its people.

What Makes This Journey Special?

A Fascinating Cultural Crossroads

Dobrogea is one of Romania's most culturally diverse regions. Throughout our journey, we discover the heritage of ancient Greeks and Romans, Byzantine influences, Ottoman traditions and the living cultures of Romanian, Turkish, Tatar and Lipovan communities.

Rather than experiencing these histories separately, we discover how they connect, overlap and continue to influence the region today.

Extraordinary Historical Sites

From the monumental Roman heritage of Adamclisi to the ancient Greek city of Histria and the medieval fortress of Enisala, this journey brings centuries of European history to life in atmospheric, often surprisingly peaceful settings.

Authentic Encounters and Local Flavours

Food is an essential part of discovering Dobrogea. Traditional fish recipes, regional dishes influenced by Turkish and Tatar cuisine, local wines and opportunities to connect with the people behind these traditions offer a more personal understanding of the region.

Landscapes You Would Never Expect

Few journeys combine the Black Sea coast, ancient mountains, open steppe, peaceful lagoons, vineyards and one of Europe's greatest wetland ecosystems in a single itinerary.

Dobrogea's natural diversity is every bit as remarkable as its history.

A Meaningful Danube Delta Experience

Unlike itineraries that travel directly to the Delta, this journey first explores the landscapes, communities and civilizations that have shaped the surrounding region.

By the time we enter the waterways, the Delta becomes more than a beautiful natural destination. It becomes the culmination of a much larger story about people, geography and the passage of time.

Who Is This Journey For?

This experience is ideal for curious travellers who want to discover a more authentic and less familiar side of Europe.

It will particularly appeal to those interested in history, archaeology, multicultural heritage, nature, birdwatching, photography, local gastronomy and wine. With its balance of guided exploration, gentle outdoor activities and time to appreciate each destination, it is especially well suited to small groups, private journeys and travellers who value meaningful experiences over hurried sightseeing.

More Than a Journey. A Story Worth Discovering.

There are places that reveal their beauty immediately, and others that reward those who take the time to explore them.

Dobrogea belongs to the second category.

Its charm lies not only in famous monuments or spectacular scenery, but in the connections between them: an ancient Greek city beside a quiet lagoon, a medieval fortress overlooking fishing villages, a mosque that speaks of centuries of Oriental influence, a family recipe passed down through generations, or a glass of wine enjoyed in a landscape shaped by time.

And then there is the Danube Delta, where everything seems to slow down and the natural world takes centre stage.

Between the Danube and the Black Sea brings these experiences together in a carefully designed journey that reveals the extraordinary diversity of southeastern Romania.

Come for the history. Stay for the people, the flavours and the landscapes. Leave with the feeling that you have discovered a corner of Europe that still holds the pleasure of the unexpected.

Nine days. Two great waters. Countless stories. One unforgettable journey.
