CROWNS OF ROMANIA - Royal Residences, Aristocratic Houses & the Story of a Kingdom
PALACES. DYNASTIES. ESTATES. GARDENS. STORIES.
THE JOURNEY
Romania's royal story lasted less than a century.
But in that relatively short period, kings and queens transformed the country.
They built palaces.
Created institutions.
Commissioned architects and artists.
Opened Romania toward Europe.
And left behind an extraordinary network of residences, estates, gardens and personal stories.
But Romania's aristocratic world was much older.
Long before the monarchy, noble families shaped Transylvania, Banat and the western regions of the country.
Their manor houses and castles tell stories of political power, family alliances, changing borders and a sophisticated Central European lifestyle.
Crowns of Romania brings these worlds together.
We begin in Bucharest, where the monarchy shaped the modern capital.
We travel to Sinaia and the magnificent Peleș royal estate.
We discover Queen Marie's world at Bran.
Then we continue west, beyond the familiar royal route, toward aristocratic Transylvania and Banat.
We enter historic estates.
Walk through gardens.
Hear the stories of kings, queens, nobles and families whose private lives unfolded behind these walls.
And finally, in the far northwest, we reach Carei and the Károlyi Castle — a reminder that Romania's aristocratic history is much wider than its royal dynasty.
This is not a journey about crowns and titles.
It is about the people behind them.
Power.
Family.
Ambition.
Taste.
War.
Loss.
And survival.
DAY 1 — BUCHAREST
Welcome to the Kingdom
Arrival at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport.
Meet your local representative and transfer to the hotel.
In the evening, welcome dinner and introduction to Romania's royal period.
The modern Romanian monarchy began in the 19th century and became closely connected to the country's transformation into an independent European state.
Tonight we introduce the four kings, the queens and the people whose personalities shaped the story we are about to follow.
Overnight: Bucharest
Meals: Welcome Dinner
DAY 2 — BUCHAREST
The Capital of a Kingdom
Today we explore Bucharest through its royal story.
Our route follows the spaces associated with Romania's monarchy and the development of the modern capital.
We discover the former Royal Palace, today's National Museum of Art of Romania, Revolution Square, Calea Victoriei and the Romanian Athenaeum.
But rather than simply looking at buildings, we reconstruct the city of the royal period.
Court ceremonies.
Diplomatic receptions.
Carriages on Calea Victoriei.
Artists and intellectuals.
Foreign visitors.
A capital trying to present itself as modern and European.
We also explore the personalities behind the institution.
King Carol I and Queen Elisabeth.
King Ferdinand and Queen Marie.
King Carol II.
King Michael.
Their private lives, public roles and different visions of Romania.
When access and scheduling permit, the day can include a royal-related museum or residence.
Overnight: Bucharest
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: Bucharest through the story of the Romanian monarchy
DAY 3 — BUCHAREST → SINAIA
The Birthplace of a Dynasty
After breakfast we leave Bucharest and travel toward the Carpathians.
Our destination is Sinaia.
Here, King Carol I created the residence that would become one of the great symbols of the Romanian monarchy:
Peleș Castle.
Inaugurated in 1883, Peleș was closely connected to Carol I and became an important setting for both private royal life and official events.
We explore the castle as more than architecture.
Rooms become clues to personality.
German influences.
European art.
Technology.
Ceremonial spaces.
Private apartments.
The residence reveals the king's ambitions for both his dynasty and the country.
We also explore the wider royal domain and, where included in the operating schedule, Pelișor, associated particularly with Queen Marie and King Ferdinand.
Tonight we remain in Sinaia.
After the day visitors disappear, the royal resort becomes quieter and more atmospheric.
Overnight: Sinaia
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: Peleș after understanding the man who built it
DAY 4 — SINAIA → BRAN → SIBIU
Queen Marie's Transylvania
Today the story becomes more personal.
We travel toward Bran Castle.
For this journey, Bran is not presented through popular legends.
Its importance lies elsewhere.
From 1920, Bran became a royal residence, closely associated with Queen Marie of Romania, and the castle was transformed to suit royal life.
We explore Queen Marie's extraordinary personality.
British-born princess.
Queen of Romania.
Wartime nurse and public figure.
Writer.
Designer.
Diplomatic presence.
And one of the most charismatic personalities of modern Romanian history.
The castle, interiors and surrounding landscape allow us to explore her aesthetic world and her attachment to Transylvania.
After lunch, we continue toward Sibiu.
The journey now begins to move beyond the royal dynasty and into Transylvania's older aristocratic world.
Overnight: Sibiu
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: Bran through the world of Queen Marie
DAY 5 — SIBIU & ARISTOCRATIC TRANSYLVANIA
Beyond the Royal Court
Romania's monarchy was young.
Transylvania's noble world was not.
Today we explore the social landscape that existed long before the creation of the Romanian kingdom.
We begin in Sibiu, whose wealthy merchants, administrators and elites played an important role in Transylvanian life.
Then we move beyond the city.
The day includes a carefully selected manor, castle or historic estate in the wider region.
The objective is not to collect castles.
It is to understand aristocratic life.
How were estates managed?
How were marriages arranged?
What languages were spoken?
How did families navigate changing empires and borders?
What happened to these estates after the Second World War?
Lunch is served in a characterful historic or rural setting.
Overnight: Sibiu / historic estate region
Meals: Breakfast, Regional Lunch, Dinner
Signature Experience: Entering the world of Transylvanian aristocratic families
DAY 6 — SIBIU → DEVA → SĂVÂRȘIN
From Noble Transylvania to a Royal Home
We continue west.
Depending on the final route, the morning includes a carefully selected historic stop around Deva or the Mureș Valley.
By afternoon, we reach one of the most important locations in Romania's modern royal story:
Săvârșin.
The Săvârșin estate became closely associated with King Michael and the Romanian Royal Family.
Today it remains one of the official royal residences.
Unlike the monumental atmosphere of Peleș, Săvârșin tells a more intimate story.
A home.
A park.
Family traditions.
Cars.
Tea.
Christmas.
Private life behind the public role of monarchy.
Depending on the season and current public-access program, we visit the parts of the Royal Domain open to visitors. In 2026, the Royal Village and park opened seasonally from late April into autumn, according to schedules announced in advance.
This seasonal character actually adds something valuable to the product.
Săvârșin feels less like a museum and more like a living royal estate.
Overnight: Săvârșin / Arad region
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: The private world of the Romanian Royal Family at Săvârșin
DAY 7 — SĂVÂRȘIN → ARAD
The Aristocratic West
Today we follow the Mureș Valley toward Arad.
The landscape opens.
The architecture changes.
The atmosphere becomes increasingly Central European.
In Arad, elegant boulevards and monumental buildings introduce the urban world in which aristocratic families, wealthy merchants and political elites interacted.
Our city walk focuses on the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Palaces.
Cafés.
Institutions.
Public life.
Depending on the final route, we can combine the city with a nearby aristocratic residence, vineyard estate or historic property.
The evening is relaxed.
Overnight: Arad
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: The refined Central European world of western Romania
DAY 8 — ARAD → ORADEA
Palaces Without Kings
We travel north toward Oradea.
Here we discover another form of prestige.
Not royal castles.
Urban palaces.
At the beginning of the 20th century, wealthy families, entrepreneurs, architects and financiers transformed Oradea into an extraordinary Art Nouveau city.
We explore the Black Eagle Palace, Republicii Avenue, Union Square and some of the remarkable residential and commercial buildings created during this period.
This is an important chapter of the journey.
Power was no longer expressed only through aristocratic estates.
A new urban elite was creating its own palaces.
We also discover the Jewish families and entrepreneurs who played a major role in Oradea's economic and architectural development.
Overnight: Oradea
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: The urban palaces of Belle Époque Oradea
DAY 9 — ORADEA → CAREI
The House of Károlyi
Our final full day takes us into the northwestern borderlands.
The destination is Carei and the impressive Károlyi Castle.
Here we enter the world of one of the important aristocratic families of the region.
The residence evolved over centuries, reflecting changing architectural tastes and the social ambitions of its owners.
We explore the castle, interiors and park while discussing the wider world of Hungarian aristocracy in this part of Europe.
By now, the journey has taken us from royal Romania to something much broader.
German dynasty.
Romanian queens.
Hungarian aristocrats.
Saxon elites.
Urban bourgeois families.
Different social worlds.
Different cultures.
Different expressions of status and power.
Tonight we gather for our farewell dinner.
Overnight: Carei / Satu Mare region
Meals: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner
Signature Experience: Károlyi Castle and the aristocratic world of northwestern Romania
DAY 10 — CAREI / SATU MARE
The End of the Royal Road
After breakfast, transfer according to onward travel arrangements.
Our journey began with a crown.
But it ends with a much wider understanding of Romania's elite worlds.
Kings built castles.
Queens created homes.
Noble families managed vast estates.
Merchants built urban palaces.
Architects transformed personal ambition into stone, wood, gardens and decoration.
Then came wars.
Political change.
Exile.
Confiscation.
Abandonment.
Restoration.
Some residences became museums.
Others survived as homes.
Some disappeared.
But together they tell the story of a Romania connected for centuries to the wider cultural world of Europe.
