The journey tells the story of Romanian Jewry—from its early communities and flourishing cultural life to the tragedy of the Holocaust, the resilience of its survivors and the Jewish communities that continue to preserve their traditions today.

Alongside Jewish heritage sites, participants will discover medieval Transylvanian towns, the traditional villages of Maramureș, the celebrated painted monasteries of Bucovina and the dramatic landscapes of the Carpathian Mountains.

Day 1 – Arrival

Arrival at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport.

The group will be welcomed by our professional English-speaking tour manager and transferred by luxury air-conditioned motor coach to the hotel.

After check-in and time to rest, we will gather for a welcome dinner and an introduction to Romania, its Jewish history and the meaningful journey ahead.

Day 2 – Jewish Heritage of Bucharest

Today is dedicated to discovering the history of Bucharest’s Jewish community.

The tour will include:

The magnificent Choral Temple.

The Great Synagogue.

The Holocaust Memorial.

The historic Jewish Quarter.

Former Jewish schools, community institutions and cultural landmarks.

Streets associated with the city’s once-flourishing Jewish population.

Through the stories of rabbis, intellectuals, merchants, artists and community leaders, participants will learn about the important contribution of Romanian Jews to the development of the capital.

Day 3 – Bucharest, Sinaia and Brașov

After breakfast, we will leave Bucharest and travel north through the beautiful Prahova Valley.

Our first destination is Sinaia, known as the “Pearl of the Carpathians.” We will visit Peleș Castle, the magnificent former summer residence of the Romanian royal family.

We will then continue through the Carpathian Mountains to Brașov, one of Romania’s most attractive medieval cities.

After checking into the hotel, we will enjoy an introductory walking tour of Brașov’s historic centre.

Day 4 – Brașov: Jewish Heritage and Medieval History

Today we will explore Brașov’s Jewish and Romanian heritage.

The program will include:

The historic Neologue Synagogue.

The Jewish community area.

The Black Church.

Council Square.

The medieval streets and fortifications of the Old Town.

Meetings with local representatives, subject to availability.

Participants will learn about the development of Jewish life in Brașov and the role played by Jewish families in the city’s commercial and cultural history.

Day 5 – Brașov, Sighișoara and Cluj-Napoca

We will depart Brașov and travel through the scenic Transylvanian countryside to Sighișoara.

This beautifully preserved medieval town is known for its colourful houses, cobbled streets, historic towers and remarkable hilltop citadel.

Following our visit, we will continue to Cluj-Napoca, the cultural and academic capital of Transylvania.

Day 6 – Jewish Heritage of Cluj-Napoca

Today’s program focuses on the Jewish history of Cluj-Napoca.

The tour will include:

The Neologue Synagogue.

The former Jewish neighbourhood.

Jewish memorial sites.

Locations connected to the deportation of the city’s Jewish population.

Important historic and cultural attractions in the city centre.

We will hear the story of one of Transylvania’s most influential Jewish communities and learn about Jewish religious, academic and commercial life before the Holocaust.

Overnight: Cluj-Napoca

Day 7 – From Transylvania to Maramureș

After breakfast, we will travel north toward Maramureș, one of Romania’s most authentic and culturally distinctive regions.

The journey will pass through rural landscapes, traditional villages, forested mountains and agricultural communities where historic customs remain part of everyday life.

Upon arrival in Sighetu Marmației, we will check into our hotel and enjoy an orientation tour of the town.

Day 8 – Jewish Heritage of Sighetu Marmației

This emotionally significant day is dedicated to the Jewish heritage of Sighet.

The program will include:

The Elie Wiesel Memorial House.

The Great Synagogue.

The historic Jewish Cemetery.

Former Jewish streets and community sites.

The memorial Museum of the Victims of Communism and Political Prisoners.

We will learn about Sighet’s vibrant pre-war Jewish community, its Hasidic traditions and the life and legacy of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel.

In the evening, the group will enjoy an authentic Romanian folklore experience featuring traditional music and dance.

Dinner will be carefully adapted to the group’s requirements, with suitable fish or chicken dishes, salads, fresh vegetables and vegetarian options.

Day 9 – Mocănița Steam Train Experience

Today, we will travel to Vișeu de Sus for an unforgettable journey aboard the famous Mocănița Steam Train.

The historic narrow-gauge train travels through the forests and valleys of the Vaser Valley, offering beautiful views of the Maramureș mountains and an opportunity to experience one of Romania’s most celebrated attractions.

Following the train journey, we will continue toward the Bucovina region.

Day 10 – The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina

Today is dedicated to the cultural and spiritual heritage of Bucovina and its famous painted monasteries.

We will visit:

Sucevița Monastery – an impressive fortified religious complex surrounded by green hills.

Moldovița Monastery – renowned for its beautifully preserved exterior frescoes.

Voroneț Monastery – internationally celebrated for its distinctive blue frescoes, often referred to as “Voroneț Blue.”

These extraordinary monasteries will introduce participants to Romania’s medieval religious art, Orthodox traditions and the unique cultural identity of Bucovina.

This experience complements the tour’s Jewish heritage focus by offering a broader appreciation of Romania’s religious and cultural diversity.

Day 11 – Bucovina, Bicaz Gorge, Red Lake and Piatra Neamț

After breakfast, we will travel through the Eastern Carpathian Mountains toward Piatra Neamț.

Along the way, we will visit:

Bicaz Gorge, one of Romania’s most dramatic natural attractions.

Red Lake, a picturesque mountain lake surrounded by forested peaks.

Traditional villages and scenic mountain landscapes.

We will continue to Piatra Neamț for hotel check-in and dinner.

Day 12 – Jewish Heritage of Piatra Neamț and Arrival in Iași

Today we will explore Piatra Neamț, including:

The historic Baal Shem Tov Synagogue.

Sites associated with the city’s former Jewish community.

A guided walk through the Old Town.

A gondola ride offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Carpathian Mountains.

After the visit, we will travel to Iași, arriving with sufficient time to prepare for Shabbat.

In the evening, the group will join the local Jewish community for Friday evening services and a meaningful Shabbat dinner.

Day 13 – Shabbat with the Jewish Community of Iași

The group will experience a complete and meaningful Shabbat together with members of the Jewish Community of Iași.

The day may include:

Shabbat morning services.

Kiddush and communal Shabbat lunch.

Time for rest and reflection.

Discussions with members of the local Jewish community.

A guided Shabbat walk, where appropriate.

Havdalah ceremony after Shabbat.

This special experience will allow participants to connect personally with Jewish life in contemporary Romania and hear directly from those working to preserve the community’s heritage and traditions.

Day 14 – Jewish Heritage of Iași and Departure

Our final day will be dedicated to the rich and complex Jewish history of Iași.

The program will include:

The Great Synagogue of Iași.

The Jewish Cemetery.

The former Jewish neighbourhood.

Memorial sites commemorating the victims of the Iași Pogrom.

Additional community and historical sites, subject to accessibility.

The visit will present the achievements of Iași’s once-prominent Jewish community alongside the tragic events of June 1941.

Following the tour, the group will be transferred to Iași International Airport for the return flight. If international flight arrangements require departure from Bucharest, a domestic flight or another suitable transfer can be incorporated into the program.
