ROMANIA'S HERITAGE STEAM RAILWAYS – A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME IN THE HEART OF THE CARPATHIANS

A Journey into the Romania of Yesteryear

There are still places in Europe where time seems to slow down, where historic trains wind their way through forests and mountain valleys, and where centuries-old traditions remain part of everyday life. Romania is one of those places.

We invite you on a fascinating journey through the heart of the Carpathian Mountains, travelling aboard Romania's famous mocănițe – historic narrow-gauge trains that have played an important role in the lives of mountain communities for more than a century.

From the wooded hills of Transylvania to the picturesque villages of Bucovina and the wild valleys of Maramureș, this tour reveals an authentic, surprising and wonderfully charming side of Romania.

Three heritage railways, three historic regions and seven days of unforgettable experiences. The nostalgic train journeys are complemented by visits to UNESCO World Heritage sites, medieval towns, encounters with local craftspeople and traditional culinary experiences.

More than just a sightseeing tour, this is a journey into a world where railway heritage, nature and local culture come together in a truly unique way.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1 – Welcome to Transylvania!

Cluj-Napoca – Târgu Mureș – Sovata

Our journey begins in Cluj-Napoca, one of Transylvania's most important cultural and historic centres.

We travel towards Târgu Mureș, a city with a remarkable multicultural heritage, where the elegant architecture of the historic centre reflects Romanian, Hungarian and Central European influences. We admire the impressive Palace of Culture, one of Romania's finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture.

Our journey continues to Sovata, a charming spa resort renowned for its wooded surroundings and the remarkable Bear Lake (Lacul Ursu), a fascinating natural phenomenon.

In the evening, a welcome dinner introduces us to the flavours of Transylvania, accompanied by stories of the historic railways that once connected communities throughout the Carpathian Mountains.

Dinner and overnight in Sovata.

Day 2 – Our First Journey Back in Time: The Sovata Heritage Railway

Sovata – Câmpu Cetății – Bistrița

Our first encounter with Romania's historic narrow-gauge railways takes place in Sovata, where we board a vintage train for a delightful journey through the picturesque Transylvanian countryside.

The train travels at a leisurely pace through rolling hills, forests and open meadows, recreating the charm of railway travel from a bygone era. The rhythmic sound of wheels on the tracks, the atmosphere of the historic carriages and the beauty of the surrounding landscape make this a memorable journey back in time.

After our railway adventure, we discover the region's culinary traditions, enjoying local specialities inspired by Transylvania's rich cultural heritage.

We then continue to Bistrița, one of Transylvania's historic Saxon towns. During a walk through its old centre, we discover medieval buildings, charming passageways and historic squares that recall the prosperity of the town's former merchant and artisan communities.

Dinner and overnight in Bistrița.

Day 3 – From Transylvania to Bucovina, Across the Carpathian Mountains

Bistrița – Tihuța Pass – Voroneț – Gura Humorului

Leaving Transylvania behind, we cross the Eastern Carpathians through the spectacular Tihuța Pass, a mountain region surrounded by forests, legends and breathtaking scenery.

Our journey takes us into Bucovina, one of Romania's most enchanting historic regions, famous for its painted monasteries, traditional villages and warm hospitality.

We visit Voroneț Monastery, often referred to as the "Sistine Chapel of the East", celebrated for its extraordinary exterior frescoes and the distinctive shade known as Voroneț Blue. The monastery forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and represents one of the great achievements of medieval art in Eastern Europe.

In the evening, we experience the flavours of Bucovina in a welcoming atmosphere, enjoying traditional dishes and discovering stories about local customs and everyday life.

Dinner and overnight in Gura Humorului.

Day 4 – The Huțulca Railway: Through the Villages and Traditions of Bucovina

Gura Humorului – Moldovița – Prislop Pass – Vișeu de Sus

Our day begins in the heart of Bucovina, in Moldovița, where the second railway experience of our tour awaits: the charming Huțulca narrow-gauge railway.

This historic railway recalls the days when narrow-gauge trains carried timber from the forests of the Carpathians. Today, the journey offers a wonderful perspective on Bucovina's rural landscapes, with traditional farmhouses, green hills and villages that have preserved much of their original character.

We then visit Moldovița Monastery, another remarkable UNESCO World Heritage monument, celebrated for its colourful exterior frescoes and the harmonious beauty of medieval Moldavian architecture.

Bucovina is also a land of living craftsmanship. During a meeting with a local artisan, we discover the secrets of traditional egg painting, one of the region's most distinctive artistic traditions.

In the afternoon, we travel through the magnificent mountain landscapes of the Eastern Carpathians, crossing the Prislop Pass area on our way to Maramureș – a region renowned for its wooden churches, intricately carved gateways and centuries-old customs.

Dinner and overnight in Vișeu de Sus.

Day 5 – The Vaser Valley Railway: An Adventure Deep into the Forests

Vișeu de Sus – Vaser Valley – Maramureș

Today brings one of the most spectacular highlights of the entire tour: a journey aboard the famous Vaser Valley narrow-gauge railway.

Departing from Vișeu de Sus, our historic train ventures deep into the Maramureș Mountains, following the course of the Vaser River through exceptionally beautiful scenery.

Originally built to transport timber, this forest railway is now a remarkable example of living industrial heritage. Historic locomotives, traditional carriages and the dramatic mountain route combine to create the atmosphere of a genuine railway adventure.

Along the way, we admire vast forests, steep mountainsides, bridges and secluded valleys in a region where nature still dominates the landscape.

A stop in a beautiful mountain setting provides an opportunity to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and an outdoor meal, depending on the railway programme.

After returning to Vișeu de Sus, we continue our exploration of Maramureș, a region where rural life and traditional customs remain closely connected to the rhythms of nature.

In the evening, we experience the legendary hospitality of Maramureș during a traditional dinner featuring local specialities and folk music.

Dinner and overnight in Maramureș.

Day 6 – Authentic Maramureș: Wooden Churches, Stories and Traditions

Bârsana – Săpânța – Cluj-Napoca

We dedicate the first part of the day to discovering the cultural heritage of Maramureș, one of Europe's most authentic rural regions.

We visit the Bârsana Monastery complex, where soaring wooden spires, shingled roofs and intricate carvings showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of traditional Maramureș architecture.

Our journey continues to Săpânța, home to the famous Merry Cemetery, a truly unusual place known for its brightly painted wooden crosses and witty epitaphs that recount the lives of those buried here with humour, affection and remarkable honesty.

It is a fascinating expression of the local community's distinctive attitude towards life, death and remembrance.

Throughout the day, we admire traditional Maramureș villages, wooden houses and impressive carved gateways, enduring symbols of the region's cultural identity.

In the afternoon, we travel back to Cluj-Napoca, where a farewell dinner provides the perfect opportunity to share memories of our journey along Romania's historic railway tracks.
