THE EASTERN STORY - A Journey Through Romania’s Hidden Moldavia

Culture, Wine, Living Traditions & Timeless Landscapes

THE EASTERN STORY - A Journey Through Romania’s Hidden Moldavia

Beyond the familiar routes of Transylvania lies another Romania. A land of ancient vineyards, remarkable stories, noble residences, medieval fortresses and warm hospitality. A place where history is woven into everyday life and every landscape has a story to tell.

Welcome to The Eastern Story — an invitation to discover the Romania you never expected.

DISCOVER THE ROMANIA BEYOND THE ORDINARY

Romania is often associated with Transylvania, medieval castles and the legend of Dracula. Yet beyond these familiar images, an entirely different world awaits discovery.

Eastern Romania, and particularly the historical region of Moldavia, offers an extraordinary combination of cultural heritage, centuries-old winemaking traditions, beautiful countryside and authentic encounters with local life.

This is the Romania of medieval princes and aristocratic families, of celebrated poets and intellectuals, of historic Jewish communities, ancient monasteries and traditional villages. It is also a land of exceptional wines, generous tables, rolling vineyards and breathtaking mountain scenery.

For centuries, Moldavia stood at the crossroads of different civilizations. Its towns welcomed merchants and travelers, its princely courts shaped regional history, and its cultural institutions contributed to the development of modern Romania.

Today, this fascinating heritage remains largely undiscovered by international travelers.

The Eastern Story invites your guests to explore this lesser-known part of Europe through a carefully designed journey that combines cultural discovery with wine tasting, regional gastronomy, scenic landscapes and meaningful local experiences.

Rather than rushing between monuments, the itinerary allows travelers to connect with the places they visit, understand their stories and experience the genuine character of the region.

From the surreal Mud Volcanoes of Buzău to the vineyards of Vrancea and Cotnari, from the elegant streets of Iași to the medieval fortresses of Neamț and the dramatic Eastern Carpathians, every day reveals a different side of Romania.

This is more than a sightseeing tour.

It is a journey into the soul of Eastern Romania.

THE JOURNEY

DAY 1 | ARRIVAL IN BUCHAREST

Welcome to Romania — The Beginning of an Unexpected Journey

Your Romanian adventure begins in Bucharest, the country's vibrant capital, where historic architecture, elegant boulevards and contemporary urban life create a fascinating first impression.

Upon arrival at Henri Coandă International Airport, guests will be welcomed by our local representative and transferred privately to their hotel.

Depending on arrival times, the remainder of the day is at leisure, offering an opportunity to relax after the journey or enjoy a first glimpse of the city.

In the evening, guests gather for a welcome dinner, an opportunity to meet their fellow travelers and receive an introduction to the experiences awaiting them over the following days.

While many visitors head directly toward Transylvania, our journey takes a different direction — eastward, into one of Romania's most culturally rich and least explored regions.

The adventure is just beginning.

Overnight: Bucharest

Meals: Welcome Dinner

DAY 2 | BUCHAREST – BUZĂU

A Landscape from Another Planet — Discovering the Mud Volcanoes

Leaving the bustle of Bucharest behind, we travel toward the picturesque countryside of Buzău, where gentle hills, traditional villages and agricultural landscapes introduce us to a quieter rhythm of Romanian life.

Our first major discovery is one of the country's most unusual natural attractions: the Buzău Mud Volcanoes.

Here, underground gases push cold mud and water to the surface, creating small cones, bubbling craters and fascinating geological formations. The resulting landscape feels almost extraterrestrial, with its grey surfaces and constantly changing shapes.

Walking through this extraordinary environment offers a memorable introduction to Romania's surprising natural diversity and provides wonderful opportunities for photography.

Beyond its geological wonders, Buzău is also a region where rural traditions and local gastronomy remain an important part of everyday life.

A regional lunch introduces guests to the comforting flavors of Romanian cuisine, prepared with ingredients and recipes inspired by the surrounding countryside.

Depending on the season and the final arrangements, the afternoon may include a visit to a local producer, a traditional food experience or another natural attraction in the region.

As the day comes to an end, we settle into our accommodation in the Buzău countryside, surrounded by peaceful rural scenery.

Highlight of the day: Exploring the fascinating lunar landscape of the Buzău Mud Volcanoes.

Overnight: Buzău countryside

Meals: Breakfast, Regional Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3 | BUZĂU – VRANCEA – ODOBEȘTI – PANCIU

The Wine Roads of Moldavia — Where Tradition Meets Terroir

Today we enter one of Romania's most important and historic wine-producing regions: Vrancea.

For generations, the rolling hills surrounding Odobești, Cotești and Panciu have been shaped by vineyards, creating a landscape where winemaking is not simply an economic activity but an essential part of local identity.

Romanian wine remains a delightful discovery for many international travelers, and Vrancea provides the perfect introduction to its diversity.

Our day includes a visit to a carefully selected winery, where guests discover the passion, knowledge and traditions behind local wine production.

During a guided tasting, we explore the characteristics of Romanian grape varieties and learn how climate, soil and generations of experience influence the wines of this region.

A winery or countryside lunch complements the experience, bringing together local flavors and the hospitality for which rural Romania is known.

Yet Vrancea is more than a wine destination.

The region also played an important role during the First World War, when some of the most significant battles on Romanian territory took place here.

A visit to a selected historical memorial introduces guests to this moving chapter of Romanian history, offering insight into the courage, sacrifices and experiences of the people who lived through the conflict.

The combination of wine, landscape and history makes this a particularly rewarding day.

We spend the night in the Vrancea or Panciu area, surrounded by one of Romania's great vineyard landscapes.

Highlight of the day: A memorable Moldavian wine experience, discovering local grape varieties and the people who keep the region's winemaking traditions alive.

Overnight: Vrancea / Panciu area

Meals: Breakfast, Wine Tasting, Winery Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4 | VRANCEA – IAȘI

Journey to the Cultural Heart of Eastern Romania

After breakfast, we continue north through the changing landscapes of historical Moldavia.

The road reveals a beautiful succession of vineyards, orchards, agricultural plains, small towns and traditional villages. These landscapes offer an authentic glimpse into a region where agriculture, craftsmanship and family traditions have shaped everyday life for centuries.

Our destination is Iași, one of Romania's most historically significant cities and a major center of culture, education and intellectual life.

For centuries, Iași served as a political and cultural center of Moldavia. It was home to princely courts, influential aristocratic families, important educational institutions and a vibrant multicultural population.

Its writers, poets, musicians and scholars played a remarkable role in the development of modern Romanian identity.

The city also has a rich and complex Jewish heritage, reflecting the important contribution of Jewish communities to its commercial, social and cultural life.

Upon arrival, we check into our hotel and enjoy some time to refresh.

Later, an introductory walk reveals the atmosphere of the historic center, with its elegant buildings, lively pedestrian areas and architectural reminders of the city's distinguished past.

Dinner offers an opportunity to discover the distinctive flavors of Moldavian cuisine.

By the end of the evening, guests will begin to understand why Iași is often regarded as the cultural capital of Eastern Romania.

Highlight of the day: Discovering the elegant atmosphere and rich historical identity of Iași.

Overnight: Iași

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 5 | IAȘI

A City of Culture, Literature and Living History

Today is dedicated to discovering the extraordinary cultural heritage of Iași, a city whose identity has been shaped by centuries of history, creativity and intellectual achievement.

Our guided exploration takes us through the historic center, where architectural landmarks and cultural institutions reveal the city's important role in Romanian history.

We discover the magnificent Palace of Culture, one of Iași's most recognizable symbols, and explore the surrounding historical area, together with selected religious and civic landmarks.

But the real fascination of Iași lies beyond its architecture.

This is a city of ideas, where generations of writers, poets, scholars and artists contributed to the development of Romanian literature, education and national consciousness.

Through the stories of these remarkable personalities, guests gain a deeper understanding of Romania's cultural evolution.

Another essential chapter of the city's history is its Jewish heritage.

Before the Second World War, Iași was home to one of Romania's most important Jewish communities. Its cultural and commercial contributions, as well as the tragic events of the Holocaust, form an indispensable part of the city's story.

Our exploration approaches this heritage with historical sensitivity and respect, highlighting both the community's achievements and its experiences during one of Europe's darkest periods.

The afternoon is intentionally more relaxed, allowing guests to explore according to their interests.

They may visit additional museums, enjoy the city's cafés, discover its gardens or simply absorb the atmosphere of this elegant university town.

Depending on the local cultural calendar, an optional evening performance may provide another memorable encounter with Iași's artistic traditions.

Highlight of the day: Exploring Iași through its architecture, literary heritage, Jewish history and cultural traditions.

Overnight: Iași

Meals: Breakfast

DAY 6 | IAȘI & THE WORLD OF THE MOLDAVIAN BOYARS

Aristocratic Elegance, Historic Residences and Forgotten Stories

Beyond its grand monuments and cultural institutions, Moldavia preserves another fascinating chapter of Romanian history: the world of the boyars, the noble families who influenced the region's political, economic and cultural development for centuries.

Today we explore this lesser-known heritage through selected historic residences, estates or museums in the Iași region.

The boyars were much more than wealthy landowners. Their families maintained connections with major European cultural centers, supported education and the arts, and played influential roles in the political life of Moldavia.

Their residences reflected changing architectural tastes, European influences and the traditions of aristocratic society.

Through stories of family life, education, social customs and the transformations brought by the twentieth century, we gain insight into a world that has largely disappeared.

Rather than focusing only on architecture and furnishings, the experience reveals the people who inhabited these estates, the communities surrounding them and the historical changes that transformed their way of life.

A regional lunch celebrates the flavors of Moldavian cuisine and offers another opportunity to enjoy the area's culinary heritage.

Later, we return to Iași, where guests have time for independent exploration, shopping or relaxation.

This day offers an intimate and distinctive perspective on Moldavia, taking travelers beyond conventional sightseeing and into the social history of the region.

Highlight of the day: Discovering the elegant and fascinating world of Moldavia's historic aristocratic families.

Overnight: Iași

Meals: Breakfast, Regional Lunch

DAY 7 | IAȘI – COTNARI – NEAMȚ

The Wine of Princes — A Taste of Moldavia's Royal Heritage

Today we leave Iași and journey toward Cotnari, one of the most celebrated names in Romanian wine history.

Set among picturesque hills, Cotnari has a winemaking tradition stretching back centuries and is closely associated with the rulers and princely courts of medieval Moldavia.

Wine from this region became part of the cultural identity of the principality, earning a special place in Romanian historical memory.

Our visit offers a fascinating contrast to the wine experience in Vrancea.

While Vrancea introduced us to the diversity and contemporary character of Romanian winemaking, Cotnari takes us deeper into its historical roots.

During a guided tasting, guests discover wines associated with the region and learn about traditional Romanian grape varieties, including the renowned Grasă de Cotnari.

The experience reveals how geography, history and local expertise have contributed to the distinctive reputation of Cotnari wines.

Following lunch, we continue toward Neamț, a region where the gentle agricultural landscapes of Moldavia gradually give way to forested hills and mountain scenery.

The atmosphere becomes increasingly peaceful as we enter a part of Romania celebrated for its medieval heritage, literary traditions and beautiful natural surroundings.

We arrive in the Neamț or Piatra Neamț area for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Highlight of the day: Tasting the historic wines of Cotnari and discovering their connection to the princely heritage of Moldavia.

Overnight: Neamț / Piatra Neamț area

Meals: Breakfast, Wine Tasting, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8 | NEAMȚ

Medieval Fortresses, Legendary Princes and Romanian Storytelling

Our journey through Moldavia continues with a fascinating exploration of the Neamț region, where medieval history, literature and rural traditions come together against a beautiful natural backdrop.

The centerpiece of today's program is the impressive Neamț Fortress, one of the most evocative medieval strongholds in Romania.

Perched above the surrounding countryside, the fortress recalls the centuries when Moldavian rulers defended their principality and navigated the complex political relationships of Eastern Europe.

As we explore the historic site, the story of medieval Moldavia comes to life through tales of princes, alliances, trade routes and the challenges of protecting a territory situated between powerful neighboring states.

The fortress is particularly associated with the era of Stephen the Great, one of the most important rulers in Moldavian history.

Beyond its military heritage, Neamț is also deeply connected to Romanian literature and storytelling.

The region inspired some of Romania's most beloved literary figures, whose works preserve memories of childhood, village life and the customs of rural Moldavia.

Depending on the final arrangements, we visit a selected memorial house or cultural attraction, offering a more personal introduction to the people who shaped Romanian cultural identity.

Lunch is enjoyed in a countryside setting, where traditional flavors and local hospitality add another dimension to the day.

In the afternoon, we travel through villages and forested landscapes, discovering the tranquil character of this beautiful region.

Highlight of the day: Stepping into medieval Moldavian history at Neamț Fortress and discovering the region's rich literary heritage.

Overnight: Neamț / Piatra Neamț

Meals: Breakfast, Countryside Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9 | NEAMȚ – BICAZ – EASTERN CARPATHIANS

Into the Mountains — Romania's Wild and Beautiful Side

After days filled with culture, history, architecture and wine, our journey takes a spectacular turn toward the natural landscapes of the Eastern Carpathians.

Leaving the gentler hills of Moldavia behind, we travel toward the Bicaz region, where dramatic rock formations, forested mountains and beautiful waters create some of the most memorable scenery in Eastern Romania.

This is a different side of the country — quieter, wilder and deeply connected to the rhythms of nature.

Our route is designed to make the most of the region's scenic beauty, with stops at carefully selected viewpoints and opportunities to appreciate the mountain landscapes.

Depending on weather conditions, season and group preferences, the day may include gentle nature walks or other accessible outdoor experiences.

The pace is deliberately relaxed, allowing travelers to enjoy the surroundings rather than rush from one attraction to another.

A regional lunch introduces the hearty flavors of mountain cuisine, reflecting the traditions and ingredients of the area.

Whenever possible, the afternoon also includes a stop in a local village or an encounter with a regional producer, providing another glimpse into everyday life in the Romanian countryside.

As evening approaches, we gather for a farewell dinner in the beautiful setting of the Eastern Carpathians.

It is the perfect occasion to reflect on the experiences of the past days: the vineyards of Vrancea, the cultural treasures of Iași, the historic wines of Cotnari, the medieval fortresses of Neamț and the many stories that make Moldavia such a fascinating destination.

Highlight of the day: Discovering the dramatic scenery and peaceful atmosphere of Romania's Eastern Carpathians.

Overnight: Bicaz / Neamț region

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Farewell Dinner

DAY 10 | NEAMȚ – BUCHAREST

Farewell to Moldavia — A Journey to Remember

After breakfast, we begin our return journey toward Bucharest, traveling once more through the varied landscapes of Eastern Romania.

As the countryside unfolds outside our windows, there is time to reflect on the remarkable diversity of experiences encountered during the tour.

We have discovered the unusual natural wonders of Buzău, tasted wines rooted in centuries of tradition, explored the cultural elegance of Iași and entered the world of Moldavian princes and aristocratic families.

We have learned about the region's Jewish heritage, walked through medieval fortresses, enjoyed authentic regional cuisine and experienced the peaceful beauty of the Eastern Carpathians.

Above all, we have discovered a Romania that remains largely unknown to the international tourism market.

Depending on flight schedules and onward travel arrangements, the program may conclude in Bucharest or be extended with an additional overnight stay.

Guests leave with a deeper understanding of Romania, memorable encounters and stories that will remain with them long after the journey has ended.

The Eastern Story may come to an end, but the memories of Moldavia will travel home with you.
