THE SOUL OF OLTENIA
Art, Faith & Traditions of Southern Romania
THE JOURNEY
Between the Carpathians and the Danube lies a Romania few international travelers truly know.
Oltenia.
A land of monasteries and fortified manor houses.
Of potters and winemakers.
Of mountain shepherds and aristocratic families.
Of mineral springs, vineyards and deep river valleys.
And a region that gave the world one of the great artists of the 20th century:
Constantin Brâncuși.
The Soul of Oltenia is a journey through the creative spirit of southern Romania.
We enter monasteries where architecture became art.
We meet potters who transform earth into objects decorated with symbols passed down through generations.
We enter the fortified homes of Oltenian boyars.
We taste wines grown on hills cultivated for centuries.
And in Târgu Jiu, we walk along one of the great artistic axes of modern Europe.
This is not simply a journey through monuments.
It is a journey through the ways people have expressed who they are.
Through stone.
Clay.
Wood.
Wine.
Music.
Faith.
And art.
DAY 1 — BUCHAREST
Welcome to Romania
Arrival at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport.
Meet your local representative and transfer to the hotel.
In the evening, welcome dinner and introduction to Oltenia.
Tomorrow we leave the capital and travel toward a Romania where mountains, spirituality and traditional culture have remained closely connected.
Overnight: Bucharest
Meals: Welcome Dinner
DAY 2 — BUCHAREST → CURTEA DE ARGEȘ → COZIA
Kings, Legends & the Road to Oltenia
After breakfast, we leave Bucharest.
Our first destination is Curtea de Argeș, one of the historic centers of medieval Wallachia.
We discover the monastery and the stories connecting architecture, royalty and some of Romania's best-known legends.
From here, the road leads toward the Carpathians and the spectacular Olt Valley.
Following the river, we enter Vâlcea.
Our destination is Cozia Monastery, dramatically located between the mountains and the Olt.
Here, architecture, medieval history and landscape come together.
Nearby, we introduce another layer of history through the Roman presence along the Olt frontier.
Tonight we stay in the Călimănești-Căciulata area.
Overnight: Călimănești-Căciulata
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: Medieval Wallachia along the Olt River
DAY 3 — COZIA → RÂMNICU VÂLCEA → BĂILE OLĂNEȘTI
Stories, Songs & Healing Waters
After breakfast, we continue to Râmnicu Vâlcea.
Here we move away from monumental history and toward cultural identity.
We discover the story of Anton Pann — writer, composer, folklorist and one of the fascinating cultural figures associated with 19th-century Romanian life.
A walk through the city introduces its historic and cultural layers.
We then continue toward Băile Olănești.
For generations, mineral springs have drawn visitors to this valley beneath the Căpățânii Mountains.
But rather than treating the spa simply as a medical destination, we use it as an opportunity to slow down.
Walk through the resort.
Taste the waters where appropriate.
Enjoy the forested setting.
The afternoon includes free time for relaxation or an optional wellness experience.
Overnight: Băile Olănești
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: From Romanian cultural history to the mineral springs of Vâlcea
DAY 4 — GOVORA → HOREZU
Books, Faith & the Art of Brâncoveanu
Today we explore one of the great cultural themes of Vâlcea:
the relationship between monasteries, education and art.
Our route takes us through the Govora area, where religious communities also played an important role in the history of Romanian printing and written culture.
Then we continue toward Horezu.
Our main destination is Hurezi Monastery, one of the masterpieces of Brâncovenesc architecture.
Rather than visiting it simply as another church, we explore the artistic language created during the age of Constantin Brâncoveanu.
Stone.
Columns.
Arches.
Painting.
Balance.
Eastern spirituality meeting Western artistic influences.
The monastery becomes our introduction to an entire Romanian artistic style.
Overnight: Horezu
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: Understanding Brâncovenesc art at Hurezi
DAY 5 — HOREZU & MĂLDĂREȘTI
Clay & Stone
Today is about two materials.
Clay and stone.
We begin with one of Romania's great living crafts:
Horezu pottery.
We visit a family workshop and meet the people who continue the tradition.
The potter's wheel turns.
Clay becomes form.
Simple tools create elaborate patterns.
Guests are invited to try the craft themselves.
This is not a souvenir-shopping stop.
It is an encounter with living heritage.
After lunch, we travel the short distance to Măldărești.
Here stand the remarkable cule — fortified tower-houses created by Oltenian boyar families.
They tell a completely different story.
A world where wealthy rural families needed homes that were both elegant and defensible.
We explore the architecture and stories of these unusual residences before returning to Horezu.
Overnight: Horezu / Măldărești
Meals: Breakfast, Traditional Lunch, Dinner
Signature Experience: Private pottery workshop with a Horezu artisan
DAY 6 — HOREZU → POLOVRAGI → GORJ
Between Monasteries and Mountains
Today nature enters the story.
We travel toward Polovragi, where monastery, mountain and gorge create one of northern Oltenia's most atmospheric landscapes.
We visit the monastery before entering the natural world of the Olteț Gorge.
Depending on group profile, we include the cave and an accessible nature walk.
But this is also shepherd country.
Whenever operationally possible, lunch or an afternoon experience introduces pastoral traditions, local cheeses and the relationship between the mountains and Oltenian cuisine.
Later we continue toward Gorj.
Overnight: Gorj countryside / Târgu Jiu area
Meals: Breakfast, Local Lunch, Dinner
Signature Experience: Faith, caves and shepherd traditions beneath the mountains
DAY 7 — TÂRGU JIU
The World of Brâncuși
Today belongs to Constantin Brâncuși.
But we do not approach his work as a collection of monuments.
We approach it as a journey.
The Table of Silence.
The Gate of the Kiss.
The Avenue of Heroes.
The Endless Column.
Together they form a conceptual path through memory, sacrifice, love, transition and infinity.
With specialist interpretation, we walk the monumental axis and discover how an artist born in rural Oltenia helped transform modern sculpture.
We also explore Brâncuși's connection to the landscape, materials and visual traditions of the world in which he grew up.
Suddenly, forms seen earlier in wooden architecture, gates, household objects and traditional motifs acquire another meaning.
This is why Brâncuși belongs at the center of the journey rather than being treated as another sightseeing stop.
The afternoon allows time for the city's museums or independent exploration.
Overnight: Târgu Jiu
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Signature Experience: The Brâncuși monumental axis with specialist art interpretation
DAY 8 — GORJ → VÂLCEA
The Oltenian Table
Today we turn from monumental art to another expression of identity:
food.
We travel back toward Vâlcea through villages and sub-Carpathian landscapes.
The day is built around local products and people.
Depending on season, we meet producers of cheese, honey, fruit products or other regional specialties.
Lunch is not simply served.
It becomes a story about Oltenian food.
Recipes.
Ingredients.
Seasons.
Family traditions.
The afternoon can include a village walk or another carefully selected cultural encounter.
Tonight we stay in rural Vâlcea.
Overnight: Rural Vâlcea
Meals: Breakfast, Gastronomic Lunch, Dinner
Signature Experience: The Oltenian table — food, stories and local producers
DAY 9 — VÂLCEA → DRĂGĂȘANI
The Hills of Wine
Our final full day takes us toward another ancient tradition:
wine.
The hills around Drăgășani form one of Romania's historic wine regions.
Here we discover how landscape, climate and generations of winemakers created a distinctive viticultural identity.
At a carefully selected winery, we walk through the vineyard and cellar and meet the people behind the wines.
The tasting focuses not only on international varieties, but on Romanian grapes and the identity of the region.
A leisurely vineyard lunch follows.
No rushing.
No final checklist of monuments.
Just vineyards, food, conversation and wine.
Tonight we gather for our farewell dinner.
Overnight: Drăgășani / vineyard accommodation where available
Meals: Breakfast, Wine Tasting, Vineyard Lunch, Farewell Dinner
Signature Experience: Private Drăgășani wine experience
DAY 10 — DRĂGĂȘANI → BUCHAREST
Farewell Oltenia
After breakfast, departure toward Bucharest and the airport.
Our journey began with monasteries and medieval rulers.
It continued through mineral springs, books and music.
We met potters and entered fortified boyar homes.
We walked through caves and mountain landscapes.
We followed Brâncuși's path toward infinity.
And finally, we sat among vineyards and raised a glass of wine.
Different expressions.
One region.
One identity.
Oltenia.
Meals: Breakfast

THE DIFFERENCE
Oltenia is often presented through separate attractions.
A monastery.
A sculpture.
A pottery workshop.
A vineyard.
The Soul of Oltenia connects them.
Because they are all expressions of the same thing:
the creativity of a region.
A monk paints a wall.
A master carves stone.
A potter shapes clay.
A shepherd makes cheese.
A winemaker works the land.
And an artist takes the forms of the world in which he was born and transforms them into universal art.
That artist was Constantin Brâncuși.
That world was Oltenia.
