THE WESTERN ROAD

An Unexpected Journey Through Romania

THE WESTERN ROAD

THE JOURNEY

Some journeys are about reaching a destination.

Others are about watching a country change as you travel through it.

The Western Road is one of those journeys.

Beginning at the Danube and continuing north through the entire western edge of Romania, this journey reveals a part of the country that remains surprisingly unknown to international travelers.

We sail through one of Europe's great river gorges.

We follow the traces of Romans, emperors and vanished communities.

We enter an imperial spa town and the industrial mountains of Banat.

We discover multicultural cities shaped by Romanians, Germans, Hungarians, Serbs and Jews.

We travel through vineyards and elegant Central European towns before reaching the multicultural borderlands of northern Romania.

Along the way, landscapes change.

Architecture changes.

Food changes.

Languages, traditions and stories change.

Yet together they reveal one remarkable region where Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe have met for centuries.

This is western Romania.

Unexpected. Multicultural. Beautiful.

And still largely undiscovered.

DAY 1 — BUCHAREST

Welcome to Romania

Arrival at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport.

Meet your local representative and private transfer to your centrally located hotel.

Time to rest before meeting your guide and fellow travelers for a welcome drink and dinner.

Tonight we introduce the journey ahead.

Over the next twelve days, we will travel almost the entire western length of Romania — from the Danube in the southwest to the country's northern borderlands.

There will be no single theme.

Instead, five different worlds will gradually reveal themselves.

Overnight: Bucharest

Meals: Welcome Dinner

DAY 2 — BUCHAREST → DROBETA-TURNU SEVERIN → ORȘOVA

The Road to the Danube

After breakfast, we leave Bucharest and travel west.

Our first major encounter is with the Danube at Drobeta-Turnu Severin.

The river has shaped this region for thousands of years.

Here we introduce the Roman story of the Danube frontier and Emperor Trajan's extraordinary campaign to conquer ancient Dacia.

We discover the remains associated with the great Roman bridge that once crossed the Danube — an engineering achievement of the ancient world.

From here, we follow the river toward Orșova.

Arrival at our accommodation overlooking the Danube.

Tonight, there is nowhere else we need to be.

A relaxed dinner accompanied by Romanian wine introduces the flavors of the region as the sun sets over the river.

Overnight: Orșova / Danube

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Signature Experience: Sunset dinner overlooking the Danube

DAY 3 — THE DANUBE GORGE

Between the Carpathians and the River

Today belongs to the Danube.

We board a private boat and enter the spectacular Iron Gates and Danube Gorge.

Mountains rise directly from the water as the river narrows between Romania and Serbia.

Our journey takes us through the Great and Small Cauldrons, past the dramatic rock sculpture of Decebalus, the historic Tabula Traiana and the landscapes surrounding Mraconia.

But the river also hides stories.

We hear about ancient armies and river trade, fishermen and border communities — and about Ada Kaleh, the vanished island whose Turkish community once lived in the middle of the Danube before the island disappeared beneath the waters following construction of the Iron Gates dam.

Lunch celebrates another part of Danube life: fish.

For active travelers, the afternoon can include an optional walk to a panoramic viewpoint above the gorge.

Return to Orșova.

Overnight: Orșova / Danube

Meals: Breakfast, Fish Lunch

Signature Experience: Private boat journey through the Danube Gorge

DAY 4 — ORȘOVA → BĂILE HERCULANE → MOUNTAIN BANAT

The Imperial Spa

This morning we leave the Danube and enter the mountains.

Our destination is Băile Herculane, one of Europe's historic thermal resorts.

Its story begins with the Romans, who valued the area's thermal springs almost two thousand years ago.

Centuries later, under Habsburg rule, Herculane became an elegant spa destination for European aristocracy.

We walk through the historic resort and discover the contrast between its imperial architecture, extraordinary natural setting and complex modern story.

After lunch, we continue deeper into the mountainous Banat region.

The landscape changes once again.

Forests, valleys and former industrial settlements introduce a very different chapter of Romanian history.

Overnight: Mountain Banat

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Signature Experience: The story of Europe's forgotten imperial spa

DAY 5 — ORAVIȚA & MOUNTAIN BANAT

Trains, Mines & Forgotten Empires

Today we explore a Romania almost entirely absent from conventional international itineraries.

The Banat Mountains were once a remarkable center of mining, metallurgy, engineering and railway development.

We begin in Oravița, discovering its Central European heritage and historic theater.

Subject to the operating schedule, we experience one of the region's most memorable journeys aboard the historic Oravița–Anina railway, winding through mountain scenery, viaducts and tunnels.

The railway itself becomes our window into the industrial history of Banat.

We hear stories of miners, engineers and communities from across the Habsburg world who came to live and work in these mountains.

A regional meal introduces another side of Banat — hearty mountain food shaped by several culinary traditions.

Overnight: Mountain Banat

Meals: Breakfast, Regional Lunch, Dinner

Signature Experience: Historic mountain railway journey

DAY 6 — MOUNTAIN BANAT → TIMIȘOARA

Villages of Many Cultures

Today we leave industrial Banat and discover its human landscape.

For generations, this region was home to an extraordinary mixture of Romanians, Germans, Hungarians, Serbs, Czechs and other communities.

Our route includes a carefully selected rural experience where we discover how this cultural mixture shaped village architecture, food, religion and everyday traditions.

Rather than simply observing village life, we meet local people and share a regional lunch.

Later, we continue to Timișoara.

After check-in, an evening walk through Union Square offers our first glimpse of one of Romania's most elegant cities.

Dinner at leisure.

Overnight: Timișoara

Meals: Breakfast, Local Lunch

Signature Experience: Banat village encounter and home-style regional meal

DAY 7 — TIMIȘOARA

A City of Many Nations

Today we discover Timișoara through the people who created it.

Romanians, Germans, Hungarians, Serbs and Jews all contributed to the identity of the city.

Our walk takes us through Union Square, Liberty Square, Victory Square and some of the historic neighborhoods beyond the monumental center.

Baroque architecture gives way to Secession façades.

Churches stand near synagogues.

Central European café culture meets the flavors of the Balkans.

We also explore Timișoara's important role in the events of December 1989, when protests here helped ignite the Romanian Revolution.

The afternoon is free for cafés, galleries, museums or independent exploration.

Overnight: Timișoara

Meals: Breakfast

Signature Experience: Multicultural Timișoara storytelling walk

DAY 8 — TIMIȘOARA → ARAD → MINIȘ WINE COUNTRY

From Architecture to Wine

After breakfast, we travel north toward Arad.

Elegant boulevards, monumental buildings and Secession architecture reveal another city shaped by Central European influences.

Following our exploration, we leave the urban world behind.

Ahead lie vineyards.

The Miniș-Măderat wine region has a long viticultural tradition and provides the perfect setting for a slower afternoon.

At a carefully selected winery, we meet the people behind the wines.

A private tasting introduces local and Romanian varieties, followed by a leisurely meal pairing regional food with wine.

Whenever accommodation standards and availability allow, we spend the night in or close to the vineyards.

Tonight, silence replaces city streets.

Overnight: Miniș Wine Country / Arad region

Meals: Breakfast, Winery Meal

Signature Experience: Private wine tasting and vineyard dining

DAY 9 — MINIȘ → CRIȘANA → ORADEA

The Road North

Our journey continues north through western Romania.

Depending on the final operational itinerary, the route may include selected stops around Lipova, Maria Radna or other historic communities along the way.

The emphasis is not on the number of monuments visited.

It is on understanding how religions, languages and communities overlapped across this frontier region.

By afternoon, we reach Oradea.

After check-in, we take an easy introductory walk through the center.

The evening light reveals colorful façades, elegant squares and an urban landscape unlike anything we have experienced earlier in the journey.

Tonight is intentionally relaxed.

Overnight: Oradea

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 10 — ORADEA

The Art Nouveau City

Today belongs to Oradea.

At the turn of the 20th century, ambitious architects and entrepreneurs transformed the city into one of the region's great showcases of Art Nouveau and Secession architecture.

We explore Union Square, Republicii Avenue, the Black Eagle Palace and some of the remarkable buildings that tell the story of this prosperous multicultural city.

We also discover Oradea's Jewish heritage and the communities that contributed profoundly to its economic and cultural development.

After lunch, guests choose between two experiences:

Culture & City — continue exploring architecture, interiors and museums.

or

Thermal Romania — spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying the thermal-water tradition of the Oradea–Băile Felix area.

We meet again in the evening.

Overnight: Oradea

Meals: Breakfast

Signature Experience: Choice of Art Nouveau discovery or thermal relaxation

DAY 11 — ORADEA → CAREI

Castles & Communities of the Northwest

Today we enter another Romania.

The road takes us through the plains of Crișana toward the northwestern borderlands.

Here Romanian, Hungarian and Swabian communities have lived alongside one another for generations.

Our destination is Carei.

At the heart of the town stands the impressive Károlyi Castle, whose history reflects the changing tastes and fortunes of one of the region's important aristocratic families.

We explore the castle and its park before turning our attention to the communities around it.

This afternoon introduces the story of the Satu Mare Swabians, German-speaking settlers whose heritage left a distinctive mark on villages, churches, cuisine and local traditions.

Dinner draws on the multicultural cuisine of the region.

Overnight: Carei / Satu Mare countryside

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Signature Experience: Károlyi Castle and the multicultural story of the northwest

DAY 12 — SATU MARE WINE COUNTRY

Villages, Cellars & Borderland Flavors

Our penultimate day is deliberately slow.

We travel through the countryside of Satu Mare County, discovering villages, vineyards and communities rarely visited by international groups.

The experience is built around three things:

people, food and wine.

We visit a local producer or winery and discover the winemaking traditions of the region.

Lunch is served in a rural setting and features local dishes influenced by the Romanian, Hungarian and Swabian culinary worlds.

Depending on the final route and season, the day may include Beltiug, Ardud or another carefully selected village experience.

There is time for conversation.

Time to taste.

Time to understand how living near borders has shaped the identity of this region.

Later, we continue to Satu Mare.

Overnight: Satu Mare

Meals: Breakfast, Wine Tasting, Regional Lunch

Signature Experience: Wine, food and village life in the Satu Mare borderlands

DAY 13 — SATU MARE

The Borderlands

Our final morning is dedicated to Satu Mare.

We explore the historic center and discover the city's Romanian, Hungarian, German and Jewish layers.

But our final story is larger than one city.

Throughout history, borders in this part of Europe have moved repeatedly.

Empires disappeared.

Countries changed.

Languages mixed.

Communities remained.

Our journey began beside one of Europe's great rivers.

It ends in a region where Central and Eastern Europe meet.

Over twelve days we have traveled through Roman frontiers and imperial spas, mining mountains and multicultural cities, vineyards, villages, castles and borderlands.

Different worlds.

One road.

One extraordinary journey across western Romania.

Depending on flight arrangements, transfer for onward travel.

The dramatic Danube becomes the forested mountains of Banat.

Mining settlements give way to elegant Central European cities.

Cities disappear into vineyards.

Vineyards become villages.

And villages lead us toward the borderlands.

The architecture changes.

The food changes.

The stories change.

Even the rhythm of the journey changes.

Yet one road connects them all.
